Class Recap 10/04/2010

On Monday at the beginning of class we had a discussion about professional athletes in our home countries, golf and ice hockey. We also discussed life of elderly relatives and how they are treated. I was really surprised, because there is a really big difference between taking care of them in different countries. For example in China life of old people is much better than in Russia. One more thing we discussed is what makes us angry and how does our culture view people who are angry.

After that we started watching the movie 'Happy Gilmore'. It's about a guy who dreamed to be an ice hockey player, but he started golf career because of some conditions.

  1. In the group discussion, I was surprised that Russia hasn't nursing home because we have many nursing homes in Japan. People are using it when their mother or father got disorder and they cannot take care of them. I think nursing home can help the person and also his/her family. It is unusual that the movie's nursing home. It's serious problem. but the movie makes me fun.

  2. Popularity of sports is different by country. Ice Hockey is not common in Korea. Golf is getting popular, but requires much money to play.
Anyway, during the discussion, I was surprised that middle eastern people much more respect older people than I've expected. I thought that is Asian culture.

  3. In the discussion, I was very surprised and interested to hear some of the things that you guys said. For example, although I imagined that nursing homes would turn out to be much more common in the U.S. than they are in other countries, I was not expecting to hear that there are no (or almost no) nursing homes in Russia, or that there ARE nursing homes in countries like China and South Korea. Thanks to you all for teaching me a little more about how elderly people are treated in your countries - this is fascinating stuff!
